In my last English class we were given the chance to reflect on our past experiences with writing and compare it to how we have been writing in this English class. I have found that the key to good writing is passion. In my high school English classes I always struggled with writing essays. I thought it was just because I was bad at writing. After taking the class I found that it wasn’t hard for me to write essays because I was bad at it. It was because I had no interest in what I was writing about. This class allowed me to choose the topics I wanted to write about. I found that instead of taking days to write three pages I could write as many pages as I wanted no problem and I didn’t fall asleep while doing it. I believe if high school teachers really want kids to grow and develop in their writing skills they should allow the kids to pick what they would like to write about. It will also be beneficial to the teacher because they won’t have to read 100 of the same papers. Let the kids have a little creativity and imagination! I like having freedom in my writing.

As I was looking for a current event to cover I came across an article by Eric S. Page . In the article titled “Wrong Number Miracle” Page describes the events that occur the day before and of thanks giving day. When one woman, Crutchfield, was calling her daughter to let her know she was going to buy groceries but was gonna have to skip out on her mortgage bill. What Crutchfield didn’t know was that she had called the wrong number. Instead of her daughter getting the message a real estate agent named Saenz had gotten the message. Saenz could have just ignored the message but instead she called Crutchfield and told her to pay her mortgage and not to worry about the groceries. Then she called Crutchfield’s daughter and asked her what groceries she would like. The daughter told her they only needed eggs and milk. Saenz knew she could get them more than just eggs and milk. On the day of thanks giving Saenz went shopping with her fourteen year old son to help her pick out foods Crutchfield’s daughter’s kids would like. Saenz bought them a whole thanksgiving dinner and enough food to last a month.

Saenz is a good role model for people today. She helped out a person in need and she went above and beyond. She could have gotten just eggs and milk but instead she put others before herself and went shopping even on thanksgiving day for somebody else she didn’t even know. In a sense she is following the golden rule. “Do unto others as you would want done unto you.”

If everyone would just follow the golden rule the world would not be so bad.

This story also reminded me of the article we read in English class about just being nice. If we could all just be a little more selfless and think of others for a change, things would change for the better.

Recently I read a two blogs. One blog post titled “Confined with Fines” and the other was “Crazy College Fines“, which was a response to “Confined with Fines”. The blogs argue that the fines being placed on dorm residents are outrageous. They provide several shocking fines to support their case. The one that stuck out to me the most was the $100 fine for not shutting the curtain. This fine is crazy. It bothers me just thinking that someone would come up with these fines. To me they are just another way for the school to get money. Instead of placing these silly fines the college could put more energy into planning more fun activities to raise money. For instance they could plan concerts.

These fines remind me of the “dumb laws” that can be found in certain states. For instance in Hawaii it is illegal to put coins in your ear. In Texas you can be fined $500 for sitting on a sidewalk and you can not use a feather duster to dust a building. These laws and the fines that are being placed on dorm residents have something in common, they are insane. However, at the same time I wonder if some of these fines are actually implemented. It might be written that leaving the shower curtain open is a $100 fine and dusting a building with a feather duster is illegal, but are these things actually put into action. I can see the fine being implemented for a missing couch but I don’t see a fine actually being place for leaving the curtain open. Just as there are “dumb laws” I believe there are “dumb fines”. Like the “dumb laws”, “dumb fines” are probably not put into use.

In life I have come to find that there are several moments that we go through on a daily basis that can be classified as awkward. One of these being what I like to call “Mirror image”. I’m am sure at some point in your life you have been in this same situation and felt awkward. This occurs when your walkin down the sidewalk or in a hall way and you end up in the same path as someone else. For some reason we never get it right. We always mirror each others motions. We never pick the right way to go. We both step right then left then back to the right. It almost looks like a dance from an on lookers point of view. A simple solution would be for everyone to just go to their right, but for some reason we just can’t handle that.

Another awkward situation that has come up a lot lately for me is, “Should I hold the door?” This is when you are at the door and you see someone that is coming to that same door. They are not close, but there not far either. You know they saw you see them, so you don’t want to look rude by not holding the door for them. However, at the same time you don’t want to make them feel like they have to rush. There should be a rule or something like if you can see the whites of their eyes or something like that.

There are plenty more awkward situations out there. Feel free to share yours. I’m sure we have all gone through the same thing.

Recently I read a blog about whether or not athletes are good role models. In the blog the writer goes onto say that athletes are not good role models because they will do anything to play. The blogger says because of this attitude athletes have begun to take steroids, do drugs, and play with injuries. The blogger says they are bad influences on kids because they will look up to the athlete and see that they are doing these thing and think it is okay.

I beg to differ though. When an athlete does something wrong like abusing steroids or drugs they are ridiculed. Take for example Michael Phelps. He was a great athlete, and still is, but he lost most of his endorsements and had to publicly apologize for a picture taken of him doing drugs. When athletes do something wrong they are punished for it, not praised. Saying that athletes are not good role models because they abuse drugs, steroids, and play when they have injuries is placing a big stereotype on athletes. That would be like saying musicians are bad role models because they do drugs, so kids will think doing drugs is cool. Not every athlete is on steroids or does drugs just like not every musician does drugs.

Athletes there are good role models. They teach kids to work hard and have fun. By achieving great things athletes can show kids that anything is possible. Take for example Jackie Robinson who became the first African American to play professional baseball in a time when segregation was a huge issue. Lance Armstrong is also a good athlete role model. He battled through cancer and went on to win the Tour de France. He has also raised millions to aid in the fight against cancer.

Athletes can be good role models, we just need to pick the right ones:)

Why do we make our beds!? I have always hated making my bed. I never got the logic behind making your bed in the morning just to undo it all a couple hours later. It is a useless chore that wastes energy at the moment I need it the most. When I get up in the morning preforming a chore is the last thing I want to do!

If you look at the big picture it takes about three minutes to make your bed. That may seem minuscule but when you add it up 365 days a year for about say 70 years. That comes out to be 1227 and a half hours or about 53 days. I don’t know about you but I could think of billions of ways I could spend 53 days other than making my bed. I would much rather spend 53 days playing soccer, talking with the fam., or even sleeping an extra three minutes a day. A little extra sleep never hurt anyone.

Some of you might argue that it keeps the bed warmer but I highly doubt it keeps the bed that much warmer. Besides I like getting into a cool bed anyways so by making the bed I am making my bed less comfortable.

I know most moms out there are guilty of making their kids make their bed, including my own, because they feel it is necessary for their kids to go through this torture. But moms just think, you could save 53 days of your kids lives for more important things than completing something that is just going to be undone. This goes for anyone who makes their beds… STOP for the love of donuts!!!
